Create a useful Figma file thumbnail

Make a file recognizable before anyone opens it. This walkthrough turns a project name, purpose and status into a readable cover.

Follow the workflow

  1. Open the target Figma file and run FigGenius from the plugins menu.
  2. Choose the cover settings and replace example text with your own project name and purpose.
  3. Insert the cover, inspect the generated frame, then set that frame as the file thumbnail.

Choose the information that matters

Use three levels: the product or client, the file purpose, and its current status. For example: “Atlas / Checkout exploration / In review.” Keep the purpose specific: “Checkout exploration” is more useful than “Design v7.” A thumbnail is a navigation aid, so it should answer which file this is before showing decorative details.

Check the file browser result

After inserting the cover frame, use Figma’s frame menu to set it as the file thumbnail. Return to the file browser and inspect it at normal card size. If the subtitle disappears, shorten the wording or increase its size. Keep detailed ownership and review notes inside the file; the cover should remain easy to scan.
